[Atavistic Angler]

Fished the upper catch and release area from 5-8pm. Rises were pretty sporadic, and I couldn't pinpoint what the fish were on, but there were swarms of caddis and stones making there way upstream. They weren't picky though, and I managed 7 rainbows with most in the 14-16inch range and one that was a hair over 18in. All were on #14 usuals. I'm still relatively new to this river, but the half dozen or so times I've been out, I have had an unusually high percentage of rainbows. After looking in my journal, out of 46 fish, 44 were rainbows. Does anyone have any input or similar experience? I tend to gravitate toward the dam, so it may just be that temps and such are more suited to rainbows. Thanks in advance and happy trouting.

Hi Justin, I also fish the Deerfield, and I too encounter high numbers of rainbows. About 10 years ago, there seemed to be a mix bag of brook, rainbow and brown trout. Last year, there seemed to be an outstanding number of browns. Up until August, I was catching mostly browns. . . probably about 7 out of 10 fish. Then the rainbows started to appear. Could it be that the major flooding in May of 2006 caused the temperatures to create this phenomenon? Are browns more active (eating wise) in colder temps? This year, lots of rainbows (and lots of damaged fish). I find brook trout to be a rarity now. . .especially one over 12 or so inches.

As for the distribution, I've found rainbows in the rapids, riffles, and heads of pools. I've found browns typically in the slower (and shallower) waters, and really they seem to be anywhere.

In the upper river I catch about 60/30/10 percent Rainbows, Browns, Brookies.

In the lower river it is more like 50/50 Rainbows and Browns
