    saltwater fly selection

Hey guys, a friend of mine has a boat that he takes out on the salt for stripers and blues, and my goal is to get some stripers and blues on a fly this year. I was wondering about fly selection. What works best for stripers? blues? I've never done this before but I want to give it a shot any help?

also what do you salt guys use for your leaders?

    thanks in advance, kyle

decievers clousers and rays flys are a good start

yup...all work well...olive over white...usually I will tie in a piece or 2 of flash and peacock herl to accentuate a lateral line...

less material is better with the rays flies...let the fly breathe in the water...same thing with deceivers......enough to give it some shape and movement...

    leader...no blues around...straight 15 pound maxima.....

i know blues are in the water I will tie in a shock tippet of 3 feet of 50 pound mono...i don't use the wire....not saying it does not work...i just don't use it.

thanks, you don't taper the leader for stripers? just 15lb maxima all the way?

nope...no taper...just 3 to 9 feet....depends if it open water or fishing a flat.....usually somewhere closer to 6 feet...I typically fish dusk to very late or early in the morning...works out better for my lifestyle with the kids...they crash after being on the water or at the beach all day and then i can either take the boat out or will hit some of the beaches and inlets and wade.

forgot to add blue over white earlier...and the other fly that worked well last year for us....and I would buy a few was a gummy minnow....looked a lot like a silverside....not worth buying the material to make yourself...they proved to be a good icebreaker for the school sized bass if nothing was happening.

fly selection can be pretty basic..no need for super complex patterns or 30 different sizes of each...stripers are pure predators...just needs to mimic color and shape of what they are feeding on.....too many flies are overly dressed in my opinion for stripers or bluefish...when they are hungry they are eating with abandon....

where can you get some good saltwater flies because I might just order a bunch in stead of buying the materials and tying them.
