I also battled with a large rainbow for what seemed like an eternity. Got him close enough to see that he took the Vladi worm and also the long pink stripe. The fish seemed to fight harder as time went on. It didn't run down stream on me so I thought I had him. Spit the bit. I also lost a few nice size fish in pocket water. I'm finding that Euro techniques take me to water types that are harder to play a quality fish so you loose them. Tough problem to have. Oh, and one more thing.The twitch at the end of the drift really works.
