Transition from Euro nymphing to alternate tactics

One thing I enjoy about TPO is the acknowledgment that no single tactic is sufficient . A good fly fishermen must be well rounded. Before I started Euro- Nymphing it was easy to transition from one tactic to another ( i.e indicator to dry fly ,just change the leader).Indicator to streamer take of indicator rig replace it with a short piece of 3x and your good to go. I used a fairly fast action nine foot rod that would cast a dry fly, indicator or streamer . I am concerned that the ten foot rods we use for euro -nymphing would be to flexible to cast dry flies and steamers properly. I participated in a seminar this weekend at Marlborough by George Daniel . His thing was dry flies as indicators fished on a very similar leader (28 feet) that I use for Euro nymphing .He still uses a sighter three pieces of different colored mono to enable strike detection when the dry fly sinks or is not visible. He talked about one and two fly dropper rigs . I have heard you refer to dry flies as indicators but assumed that you were changing from the long eruro leader to a traditional tapered dry fly leader. So my very long winded preamble boils down to this. How do you switch from one tactic to another? Do you change rods ? Have you used this dry fly indicator method with the long Euro leader. What are your thoughts on this tactic? Could you also thow a streamer on the end of the long leader ?

Bill- the easiest would be (if you are near your car) to have another rod or rods set up for other methods. I'm interetsed/suprised to hear that George uses a 28 foot leader with the dry/dropper. Sounds tough to impossible to cast. A streamer would be very difficult to cast on a super long leader, I would put a different leader on or grab another rod.

The room was full and the presentation was about an hour and a half so I could have got some of it wrong. The thrust of his presentation was a quick changeover from long leader nymphing to dry fly indicator nymphing . He said that he made his change over at the tippet ring . I think tippet rings are not street legal for competition so I assumed he made the shortcut for a large group presentation. He referenced using a long three color mono filament sighter with the dry fly indicator rig . He used the sighter as the strike indicator when the dry fly sunk or was not otherwise visible

Not being in the room...I bet he tailored his set-up for non-competition. He loves the dry dropper set up.

regarding change over...I just pack 2 rods. 10 footer for the nymphing and if I choose to switch to streamers or dries I have a nine footer in the backpack with me.

I would be very surprised if George used a 28ft leader, and l see no reason to do so either.
Unless he was using a very long thick diameter but section.
To cast such a long leader system accuarately would be very difficult in zero wind conditions, let alone when wind was present at least so far as fishing rivers.
max l would use fishing stillwater would be around 20 with two to 4 fly rigs.
This is a very different matter compared to fishing rivers.

Davy, what is the longest leader you use in rivers?

I realize it is rather a nitch rod but how does the throw a reg wt foward 3 wt and a dry? I am a new member an really enjoying the board- thanks.

The rod casts quite well with a DT 3 weight line. The four weight would be ideal if you wanted to fish dries, wets and nymphs. That rod casts really well. You can even put a weight forward on it and the rod won't become too soft as a result of the line. I would not go using a performance taper line with any of these rods. I would use a Selective Trout by Rio.
