Fished the Sandy Point Flats yesterday from 10am to 3pm. Overall was slow but lots of birds and sand eels around. If there was sun, would have been perfect for site fishing. No wind, calm water. Started out over at the grass flats in front of the flag pole and just east of that area. So a decent amount of fish but couldn't make a cast due to being under my yak and cruising. We be bopped back and fourth from there to the flat on the east side. I am sad to see that the little island/sandbar is no more. Just 2 rusty poles sticking out of the ground. Anyway, went back to the grass flats and we spooked several fish. All feeding just below the surface. We took our time and paddled very slowly looking for fins and tails and we found them. I saw one fish, made one 2 casts, and BANG! Landed a beautiful 27 inch striper. My brother in law hooked and lost one around the same size. He did manage to hook and land a smaller fish. It was great to see those big fish finning around. I had a couple of other opportunities to cast to fish just as large and bigger but no takes. I had one that as soon as I let the fly land, he was already turned the other way. Wasn't spooking him, just he was looking elsewhere so quickly that it was hard to anticipate his path. Anyway, back at the parking lot at 3:30pm. On vacation for 2 weeks so i will hopefully be spending a lot of time down there. Tight ones!
