Fished w/ my Sunset Amnesia this weekend.

On Sunday I fished 3 1/2 hours in the Housy Meadows State Park (railroad track side). I nymphed w/ 3 foot #20 sunset AM.....then another 4 feet 3x fluoro - then tippet w/ fly and dropper fly on 4x fluoro. Pretty productive for me...landed 2 nice fat rainbows...1 smaller brown and had 3 other heavy trout give me a good fight but spit the fly out before I could get them close to my net. On Saturday I fished a smaller stream in the croton watershed (West Branch) - landed a few smaller wild browns - but I think my set up wasn't as effective....re: I was using a 3wt 7' rod loaded with 4 weight line.....i used the 5 foot AM (20#/15# formula) and while I was able to turn the flies over okay....I think for smaller line weight I may experiment with 15# sunset AM as my Butt section...i felt like the 5 feet of AM was too much...maybe 3 feet of #20 would have been fine vs. 5 feet...but I figure smaller rods/line weight would warrant lighter BUTT section....what do you think?

You can do that. I would use maybe 15 to 10 pound. I have found that when fishing shallow water zones I like to have a longer butt section. I like to do this because I can grease it as Davy showed me to make it float and to use it for easier strike detection. Also, when fishing shallow you need less weight and there fore the butt section can be used to keep your flies shallower.

For deep water nymphing I have been using a 3 foot section of 17 pound. I like to use more tippet when fishing deeper water types. of course I am not using a strike indicator when fishing.

If I were using a strike indicator I would have the standard 5 foot butt section at all times. the section that I would modify would be the 4 foot section. I would do this depending on the water depth that I am planning to fish.

I would venture that the butt section does not affect the rod much. Remember, the fly line has a much greater diameter then the amnesia. I would say that the indicator and the shot are having the greatest effect with the shorter/lighter rod.

The biggest thing you need to do when fishing smaller waters is to shorten your overall leader. I still use 25# Amnesia when strike indicator nymphing with my 4 weight- this helps in turning over your indicator, esp. when using wind resistant yarn. However, on smaller waters I usually shorten up my leader- 2 foot Amnesia butt instead of 3, 2' piece of 12# transition instead of 3', and my 4' piece of 2-3x becomes 2-3', and then I put my 12-18" tippet of 4-x on. Hope this helps.

Aaron/Torrey....thanks for the comments...they make alot of sense. I'll continue experimenting with varying lengths and applications for different situations. AM is so cheap it doesn't hurt the wallet trying different things.
