Deerfield 7/7-9

Fished the Millers, and then headed right down the road to the Deerfield. Decided to go after they released the dam (they didn't release for about 4 days previous), hoping it would breath life into the lower parts. Even with the release (750-900 cfs), the water wasn't too cold, I'd say about 63-66 degrees F.

Part I: Fished the upper Deerfield, in all of my favorite pools, and caught several rainbows, and 1 brookie. All fish were moderate in size, taking nymphs: barr emerger (bwo), copper john, and b. hares ear. Also had success on size 10 black stones.

Part II: fished the lower Deerfield. The lower half has a LOT of unfished (un-pressured) water and stretches. I usually don't venture down there because the bottom has a lot more vegetation, and a lot less rock structure. Had very little success, just a few smaller fish. In the afternoon, a spinfisherman came out of no where and suddenly came within literally 8 feet of me (to my right no doubt, my casting arm), and started fishing. I was literally on a stretch that had no fisherman that I could see both a MILE upstream, and a whole MILE downstream. UNBELIEVABLE. Not only that, you would have expected that if he did want company, he would have started conversation. NOT A WORD. I dealt with him beside me for about 15 minutes, and after I worked the pool, I left and found solitude again. Are people getting more rude, or just more stupid? Mind you, the pool I was fishing was very small, and the water was shallow; just imagine his big silver and gold spinner lure (which by the way was about 7 inches long) slashing and splashing through the water.

Part III: tried my new TFO TiCr 9' 6wt throwing huge black streamers during the midnight shift in the upper Deerfield. Started at about 12:15 and ended about 2:30 or so. During that time, I had two gigantic strikes, and had one on my line for all of about 6 or 7 seconds before he got off. I was throwing big black zonkers with a deer hair head, and black weighted sculpins.

Had a great time that few days fishing my new TFO Teeny 10' 5wt nymphing rod during the day, and TFO TiCr 9' 6wt . These rods are really unbelievable, and a bargain. The 6wt TiCr is my new favorite rod. Two thumbs up, thanks for all the recommendations guys.

All in all, had a great time, although not as many fish as I'd thought from my many previous outings at the Deerfield. June and July are usually make for incredible days. I'll be back up there in about a week. Will repoert more. Looking forward to trying to get out with SloNDeep sometime soon.

Excellent report. I also bought the TiCr 6 weight this year (the one with fighting butt) and love it. It's been a joy to fish with all year. I may even buy another rod weight in the same series soon.

Hi Alain, I agree, I too am thinking about another weight in that series. I've fished all the other TFO rods (except the TiCr X), and I like this one the best. The Teeny series are nice and stiff with great action, but the TiCr are really remarkable rods, and I think a step above the Teeny series. In my limited rod trials, I don't think there's a rod like it unless you spend several (at least) hundred more. I too have the 6 wt with the fighting butt. I'm anxious to try the TiCr X, which I believe is for the salt. The little I do in the salt, I'm not sure it would be worth it, but I'm excited to try one hopefully at some point.

The discourteous behavior from other anglers is growning these days in exponential proportions. I'd like to think that making an impression on those other anglers would open their eyes to what I consider common angling courtesy. . .but no luck so far. I guess we just have to keep trying.
