    The Bighorn in Mid-August?

Can anyone speak to the fishing on the Bighorn in Mid-August? Just pulled the trigger on three days of floating that great river. Hoping to be able to fish on top most of the time.

I would not frown upon the nymph fishing. I think that is the best long line strike indicator nymphing river that I have been to. Mid August might be a bit late for the good hopper fishing. There are at least 100-125 bots drifting down each section every day. The fish learn that the hoppers are bad quickly.

Any depression in the stream bed, drop off/ledge, side channel, riffle and other spot in the stream has hundreds of fish. It's crazy there! You only need three nymphs, a soft hackle Ray Charles, soft hackle sow bug and a two tone San Juan worm

The black caddis egg laying flight in the evening will be your bet bet for trout on dries.

I fish the bighorn every year from mid august to mid September. I agree with Aaron,s comments but would add the following. The Trico,s came back last year for two weeks. These are big Tricos (size 18) the hatch was not prolific but it did turn the fish on. According to local legend a flood a few years ago wiped out the trico population. There are two additional wild card hatches that may happen one is a mahogany may fly size 16. Lasts only two or three days and does not happen regularly and flying ants. These babies are big and turn the fish on . I euro nymph this river but I search for my spots carefully. Indicators work better.

I appreciate the responses. They're saying that the grasshopper numbers could be the highest in decades in that part of the state this year. I know that's not a good thing for agriculture but I'm thinking it will be a very good thing for the trout fishing.

Do not discount fishing wet and softhackle combinations, l have done real well on this river over the years. Few fish these methods and they are not by and large flies the fish have ever seen.
Both dead drift and worked flies are the deal.
For sure Trico hatches here can be awesome.

It is my view that by far the bulk of guides tend to fish more or less in the same way, typical hopper dropper rigs, like the fish have not see that 1000s times, no wonder that many days for these fisherman amount to very few fish. Same also for the flies that are used, given em something different and present it in a different way.
