2007 FALL BROODSTOCK ATLANTIC STOCKING

DEP will begin its annual stocking of surplus broodstock Atlantic salmon next week.
Approximately 500 surplus broodstock Atlantic salmon (110 from DEP’s Kensington Hatchery and
400 from the White River National Fish Hatchery in Vermont) are scheduled to be released next
week. These fish will range in size from 3 to 15 pounds each.

Each year, surplus broodstock Atlantic salmon are stocked into the Naugatuck and Shetucket Rivers.
However, flows in these two rivers are currently too low due to the ongoing drought. As it is not
possible to hold these salmon at the hatchery until water levels improve (holding these fish at the
hatchery would interfere with and endanger salmon spawning operations that are currently
underway), next week’s salmon may instead be released into several lakes & ponds.

Additional rainfall is predicted for this week, but, should flows in the Naugatuck and Shetucket
Rivers not increase to levels considered sufficient by DEP biologists, next week’s salmon will instead
be released into Beach Pond, Crystal Lake, Mt Tom Pond, Tyler Lake and Squantz Pond. Regulations
for the broodstock salmon would be the same as for trout in these water bodies except for the daily
creel limit, which will be one salmon per day. Staff will assess stream flows prior to making a final
determination.

a short piece in the New London Day says the Naugatuck will be stocked this week, but not the Shetucket.

i don't get it. all the usual places they put them in the Shetucket are deepwater pools. the flow may be down, but there's plenty of depth.

these fish are SUPPOSED to be caught; it's not like they expect them to hold over to spring and make their way to the sea.........-paul

OK, Aaron, here's the picture I told you about. I caught this broodstock Atlantic Salmon in the Naugatuck on Thanksgiving Day 1993. The photo was taken by Robert Gregorski and appeared in the CT Fisherman Review magazine in early 1994.


This fish was an 18lb male caught on a size 6 Mickey Finn right at the tail out you see in the photo. The dam in the photo (Union City) no longer exists. Since that day, I haven't fished for these salmon much, but I did manage to catch one other one in the Shetucket (on an olive krystal bugger) and saw Mike catch a nice hen last year in the Naugy, near Campville.

Wow.. What a pretty fish. That is one of the ones that looked awesome. I really liked the jaw on that fish and the colors are great too. I might actually go after them tomorrow afternoon after seeing that.
