I find these less well-known companies through research. I like trying to find the new next thing. You know once upon a time someone took a gamble on sage or scott or loomis and found a quality product and the rest was history. I think its incumbent upon us as fishermen (and americans) to take a flier from time to time on a new product by a new company, otherwise we may miss out on innovation. Plus, with the big names you get quality (to a point... see Orvis for an example of when you no longer get quality, just a name), but you're also paying a big mark up because of the name. I try to find something I can get in on the ground floor on. Help spread their name. Provide some competition for the big 3 or 6 or whatever. Same with vises. You know once upon a time Renzetti was just a guy machining his vises across the river from trenton without anyone knowing who he was. Scott was just some guys in Telluride rolling blanks. All these places started somewhere. If we never try out the new guys, then how do we know if we're missing out on something great. I've seen several articles about vises by guys who tested all the vises reviewed in the article, and many of them found PEAK out performed comparable Renzetti and Dyna-King vises. It wasn't until you were paying twice as much that the vises were rated better than the PEAK. Personally, I find it satisfying to "discover" these deals. You may give something up in looks, but for me its all about performance. If I wanted a good looking rod, I'd never buy it factory-made, I'd just get a blank and have it wrapped by Mr. Dettmar. With a vise, when I invest in one, I want it to be the highest quality for the cheapest price because the name on it doesn't matter to me. That being said, with the way I shake, I'm seriously considering the nor-vise just because I don't have to move the line, I just spin the vise.
Wow, sorry for the diatribe. I just firmly believe in giving the new guy a chance.
