Basic Dubbing Colors...per AK's Production Fly Tying

I no longer have my copy of Production Fly Tying by A.K. Best.

A.K. list around (11) basic dubbing colors in his book. I think it is under the section related to Body Materials/Dubbing. If you have a copy of the book handy, time to quickly research and reply, would you please post the basic dubbing colors from the book?

I think he mentioned the basic dubbing colors used to blend the bodies of his flies in the Dying and Bleaching by A.K. Best. It may have been listed towards the back of that particular book.

    Thank you.

    Jeff,

I do not have the book, but here is my for must have dubbings:

    Spiky Squirrel
    natural gray
    dark brown
    natural fox

    Hares ear
    natural
    tan
    olive
    chocolate brown
    insect green
    Black

    Dry fly/superfine
    chocolate brown
    sulphur orange (in east)
    PMD (for you western guys)
    Adams gray
    olive
    tan
    insect green
    black

    Ice dubbing
    orange
    UV brown
    chocolate brown

I am sure that there are a ton more out there that are must haves, but when right off the top of my head I could tie most of the flies that I make with these dubbings

    Aaron,

Thank you for listing your favorites. I have to admit I love the Superfine by Wapsi. I remember the first time I dubbed with the stuff. I dubbed a tight little body and strutted around the room like a very proud rooster that escaped from Whiting Farms. Haha.

I typically use either opossum or hare's mask in various colors and shades for nymphs.

I have to admit, you have raised my interest in Ice Dubbing by watching you implement into some of the flies that made it into the spotlight on the TPO Fly Of The Month.

The reason I inquired about the basic dubbing colors mentioned in A.K. Best book, I planned to order the base colors (of rabbit) to experiment with during the upcoming winter.

Thank you for taking me with you on your fly fishing and tying adventures through TPO videos. I can never thank you enough! It keeps some of us sane in a hectic world.

    Jeff

    Tinyflies,

Not sure if this is what you are looking for, but on page 48 in the "Bodies and Materials" section he wrote this...

"You only need a few basic colors of fur from which you can blend to make any shade of dubbing. They are black, gray, cream, yellow, tan, brown, olive, red and white."

If this isn't it, I will read some more. CJ

    CatskillJohn,

That's what I'm searching for thank you. I thought there were a couple of other colors. He probably made an addendum in the back of his book Tying and Bleaching Materials in the section where he spoke on dubbing blends.

Quite simply. I'm gonna have to pickup another copy of his books.

I really, really appreciate you taking time to search out the information and postin' it. Tip of the hat to you

    Jeff
