Please give the freestoners a break after Friday!!

Thursday and Friday are doable with lows around 60 and highs in the high 70s and low 80s.

    After Friday...

    Saturday July 3rd high 90 low 68
    Sunday July 4th high 96 low 72
    Monday July 5th High 95 low 75
    Tuesday July 6th high 95 low 70
    Wednesday July 7th high 91 low 70
    Thursday July 8th high 90 low 70
    Friday July 9th high 89 low 72

There are no real chances for rain either. I pray that this will end! Just beware of the warm water and carry a thermometer... Or go catch some bass and carp!

Aaron, I was about to make a posting asking opinions re when do we give the fish a break. This is the first year in a long time that I've done any trout fishing after April. I'm usually saltwater fishing at this time and take July and August off to catch up on tying for salmon/steelhead fishing Sept - March. Is there maybe a general rule re dangerous water temps?

I've heard 70 is the cutoff for water temp. So, perhaps stop at 68 to be safe?
As far as fishermen go, Captain Ahab was pretty tame.

This is where there is some grey area. I say that 70 is the cutoff for temps only because if the high water temperature for the day is 70 then this means that the water is going down to the mid sixties over night. This drop in water temperature ensures that the trout will get sufficient oxygen to recover.

When you have water temperatures over seventy degrees the morning water temperatures are usually in the high sixties.

So my rule of thumb is to fish in the very early morning and be off the stream by about 11 or 12. I take a stream temperature and if its in the mid sixties at the starting time, I will fish. If its higher than let's say 65, I usually will not fish. From there I keep track of the water temperatures at regular intervals until I get to the cutoff point of 70. Another thing to do is to check the USGS stream gaging stations for temperature data. Many of them do have it. Look to see what the daily high and low water temperatures are. Many times you can find streams that are in the same vicinity of the stream that you are planning to fish. They will generally have similar water temperatures unless the type of stream differs. Tailwater, freestone and limestone streams will all run at varying temperatures. Tailwater and limestone streams are usually cooler due to where the water comes from.

It's going to be a tough one for those fish for sure. I can't believe how hot it's been and there is no real end in sight.

It would be when guys dont stop fishing for them. Fortunately posts like this keep reminding everyone how we should be aware of the temps. The good thing about trout is they have been around a long time, and are experts at staying alive. Spring seeps and deep areas is where they will hold in hot temps, and since the warmer water slows down their metabolism, they dont require the same food intake as when its cooler. Leaving them alone and fishing for bass and panfish for a while and they will be there happy and healthy when things cool off.

I feel bad for them when the ice breaks up in spring, thats scary! CJ
