    trains and trout

My driving to fishing ratio has been leaning more to the driving side the last couple trips so I decided to keep it close to home last weekend. I decided to not drive at all and take the train to one of my favorite streams about an hour north of NYC by train. It was great just relaxing and having coffee and a bagel while watching the scenery roll by. A quick cabride to the stream and a hike away from the road and I was completely alone!
I had taken a euronymphing clinic the weekend before and really wanted to work on the weak points my instructor had pointed out. I have been fishing this style for about a year now and never realized how sloppy I had become. I concentrated on being more precise on all the aspects....fly weight choice, casting accuracy, rod angle, etc.
The fishing was slow at first but at some point it was as if a switch was thrown and the fish started hitting anything I threw at them! Most were in the 10"-14" range but there were also 3 or 4 16"ers which, for this stream, could be classified as "toads".
I hung around a nice long flat that usually has some risers in the afternoon but none appeared. This stream has an awesome sulphur hatch so I anticipate this pool to be really boiling 3 or 4 weeks from now.
Called the cab to come pick me up and headed home.....only in NYC!

Having lived in Manhattan for about six years, I can totally relate to that story. I often tried to figure out a way to do something like that but had a car in CT so I usually gave in to that. You could write a how to story for one of the fishing mags and they would buy it I'm sure..seems like a pretty cool adventure.
