Skied a half day and fished the other half on Sunday with my Dad, went in town on the Blue River because it's nice and close. Caught 6, biggest being a 18" brown, which is a real treat when fishing through town! He took my #20 baetis nymph pattern.
Checked the weather Sunday night for Dream Stream section of the S. Platte, called for sunny skies and highs of mid-40s low 50s. We got there at 8am and cloud cover everywhere, which meant highs of 17 degrees until the sun finally came out just before noon. Second bend we fished I hooked into a BIG rainbow. I took him on a #22 red rojo midge. With ice on the guides, and 7x tippet, I didn't think it was going to go well, but somehow I got the fish to the net! Big lakerun spawner, about 23".
Later on in the morning, I took this 19" rainbow on a Mcfly foam egg in orange.
Overall it was a great day, and ended up catching 8. I talked to another fisherman as we were starting our way back to the car, and asked him how he did. His reply was, "Well I only hooked one, but I think the fish haven't gotten up into the river yet, the water is still too cold..." Keep on thinking that buddy...
