    Fishingct82,
The best thing I would recommend is to hire a good teaching guide. That is one who will not only get you into fish but help you learn the techniques as well. You not only will shorten the learning curve but it will make certain that the information you are getting is valid and will actually help you. The other possibility is the nymphing clinic on April 24th at UpCountry fly shop on the Farmington River featuring professional guide and owner of this site Aaron Jasper. Dollar for dollar this is the way to go if you can't pony up for the guide trip. The number at UpCountry to reserve a spot is 860-379-1952.

Try a couple DVD's off of Amazon.com or maybe some books.

I didn't think of that. That's better way to go and a lot cheaper too!!

Spend some time on the Housatonic River this summer. The drive from where you're at to Cornwall isn't far at all. It's a relatively easy river to learn to fish and practice nymphing and dry fly tactics. Those fish aren't super picky. Plus, the hatches are usually really good!

I also agree with the posts above. A basic fly fishing DVD or book will take you a long way as far as how to rig up for different situations and set you up to be able to take fish. Time on the water though is the best remedy for figuring things out.

Davy Wotton has an excellent video on Wet fly fishing called wet fly ways. It's like 35 bucks or so and well worth the money.

I wish I knew I could have gotten the fly fishing skills I wanted by just having an Amazon account! All the money I spent on guide trips and clinics over the years. If I only knew.

Nothing beats guide trips and time on the water with those who are far better than us to teach us first hand. I think videos and books are helpful, but definately not in the same league. I for one am taking a couple of guide trips from Aaron to help me out. I think I'll learn much more doing that than watching a video. Just my opinion.

Good points Frank. DVD's and books are a valuable tool but are limited in their value to a learning flyfisherman. I personally had a hard time conveying this information to the stream. As example, the wet fly DVD you speak of is a very specific and detailed description of a technique which a beginner might be better off not tackling right off the bat. Then going back to it to round out ones arsenal after other more basic concepts are mastered.
