    Echo PE Shadow?

I hope the Echo PE Shadow rods are not delayed getting to the stores. I have one reserved but am concerned about a possible delay. Plus I do have a concern about the lack of a butt section. And I don't mean some detatchable screw on contraption. I remember attending a seminar at CVTU and George Daniels was talking about how he prefered a butt section on his rod. He said by resting the butt section on his fore arm it lessened wrist fatigue. I wonder if Hardy has or is coming out with a rod with similar action and a butt section that might be worth a consideration as an alternative to the Echo.

    Magnet,

Do you have wrist problems? I sometimes get wrist pain. It really started when I began fishing in Alaska... big rods, big flies and way too many big fish. Of course age and the repetitive motion of casting has taken its toll. I also found my wrist would hurt/ tire when I started fishing longer rods. So I made some adjustments. Part of the fatigue came from the feeling that I was holding up the tip of the rod during the drift. Easy solution...I matched the rod with a better reel. Also, I changed my casting stroke. The increased leverage of the longer rods did not match well with my "wristy" style. Now I derive power more from my shoulder and elbow. I hope to be casting for a long time.

Anyway, I am not sure you need a fighting butt to solve wrist fatigue. To me a fighting but adds unnecessary weight and may add to shoulder fatigue while extending my arm during the drift phase. It may just be in my head of course. Now if you are fighting monster trout all day that is another story.

On a final note, I also hope the Echos are available soon. I know they are worth the wait.

    Re: Echo PE Shadow?

Hi Bret! Thanks for you response.
My wrist and elbow issue started in Montana, fishing 14 straght days trying to keep up with AJ last summer. My thought is that an extended butt section may provide an ergonomic mechanical advantage where by the wrist can be held in a straight alignment and serve as a fulcrum in a lever system rather than bearing the brunt of the rod holding force. As I mentioned, George Daniels alluded to this at a seminar I attended discussing rod choice for Euro-nymphing. I am looking forward to purchasing the Echo Shadow 10'6" 3 wt as soon as Upcountry fly shop gets them here in Connecticut and will post my impressions and feed back for everybody.

    Wrist / Arm problems?

Simple solution = Two Handed Rods.

    Beulah 10.5 ft 4/5wt
    TFO Deer Creek 11ft 4wt
    TFO Professional 11 ft 5wt
    Echo Dec Hogan 11'9" 4wt
    Echo Switch 10.5 ft 4wt

All of these rods are Switch rods and cast easily single handed and will spey cast two handed with very light lines with heavy flies.

    Regards,
    FK

I don't know why but the switch rod thing doesn't appeal to me. I may be wrong but I just have this thing in my mind that it would be like using a bazooka to hunt ducks!

    Re: Echo PE Shadow?

That would have been true two years ago, nowl we have two handed 4wt rods that are softer than your Euro nymph rods.

The longer cork allows a neutral balancing of the rod which is not possible with the convenational single handed 10ft-11ft rods.

    FK

    Re: Echo PE Shadow?

Thanks FK. Its definatly worth a consideration. The 10 foot 3 wt echo shadow seems like it may be a faster tip alternative to the Greys streamflex. The 10 ft 6 inch 3 wt version (which is the one I am buying) will be a touch softer because of the extra length but yet is long enough that it makes you wish it had a fighting butt.I am looking forward to to them coming in the middle of March so I can see for myself.

    Ranger Keen,
Are you sure about that? I thought the Echo was made in Canada. I'll be dissapointed if that's the case.
