    Housatonic 5/25/2007

met up with alain from the site. the fishing was slow. i got six trout three nice ones and three smaller ones. the trout were very inactive during the heat of the day. the water temp was up to 70 degrees for the first time so i am sure that played a major part in the fishing being slow. now is the time to focus on the early morning and late evening for the best fishing. for hatches we saw tons of small BWOs from a size 20-22, some light cahills and some march browns/grey foxes. not too many fish rising at dark either ??? i hope that the fishing improves for today... we will see. will report back later!

I had a great time, and learned a lot. Aaron is really a master fisherman. Here are the two pictures I took, sorry for the red eye. I'll post more later. Thanks Aaron!!!

I was actually at the Hous for the whole day, starting just at daybreak. In the early morning I nymphed some riffles and finally hooked up with a L-A-R-G-E fish around 8am on a generic olive beadhead. I never saw the fish but fought it up and downstream for about 5 minutes and the hook pulled out. I am pretty sure it was a brown because I could feel the head shaking. After that I more or less waited for the caddis hatch which never really happened. By mid-morning, air temp was already in the low 80s. Right after lunch I found a shady seam and nymphed 3 nice bass and one fat 12in stockie. I met up with Aaron around 3, after a great informative discussion with NymphMeister at the shop. Both of these guys really know the river, especially locations and habits of large trout.

When Aaron and I hit the river, he nymphed a large rainbow on the first cast! No kidding! We moved around a bit and an hour or so later Aaron caught a small fish, then another feisty rainbow that jumped like crazy (pictured above). Around this time I was able to nymph two more nice bass (no luck with trout for me). There were huge numbers of olives hatching late afternoon. After a quick sandwich, we got ready to fish the evening hatch. The hatch came off very late, past 8pm. I recorded a water temp of 70 at this time. Regarding the hatch: lots of light-colored mayflies in size 12-16, along with spinners. Many quality fish were rising right at the edge of visibility, although the moon light helped. I caught a small fish, and Aaron was able to land the nice brown above, pretty much in the complete darkness. We called it a day.

I was glad to spend the afternoon fishing with the predator; an experience I'll always remember and hope to repeat again soon.

This looks like the lower river, we should bring everyone down there. Not like a certain someone isnt telling everyone anyway.

Since Harold is trying to convince the state that this area needs to be designated as catch and release for a all species - there is a need for fishermen to have a good experience in these waters - or why else would they be in favor of the new regulations - if they believe it is not worth considering - the it will remain an area where people can take all the big fish. I also know that Harold has been fishing this part of the river for lots of years (more than most of us) and laughs every time one of us comes in and tells him about the nice fish down there.
