    Steelhead! Salmon River

Did a suicide run up to the SR on Sunday. We call them suicide runs because it is a very long day with a lot of driving and a lot of fishing and by the time you make it back to your bed, you feel dead tired. Wake up at 3:00AM, 4 hr drive to Pulaski, fish all day with few breaks, hook up over and over (hopefully), make the 4 hour drive back, then collapse!

Sometimes it's not worth it, but it was this trip. We arrived at the Douglaston Salmon Run a little after 7:30AM and surprisingly, there were only about 15 cars in the lot.

Rig up, load the back packs with water and food and head down to the river.

Fishing started off slowly for me, but as the morning progressd, the action picked up. The flow was 335 according to the DSR, but the gauge said closer to 400.

Sucker spawn seemed to work pretty well all day long in both pink and oregon cheese. I also had a few hook ups on a Crystal Meth.

Ended up with about 15 hookups and 6 landed, not including a small brown and a couple jack steelies. My fishing buddy Rob went about 10 for 25. He also landed 2 legit browns and he got the big fish of the day, a steelie that was 34" and roughly 15lbs.

Here's a couple photos from the day. Can't wait to go back this coming weekend!

Dave thanks for taking some great pic's and driving up and back. Those steelies up there fight like crazy. I'm going to have to tie alot more flies for next time. Do you have any suggestions as to what color sucker spawn I should use?

Its great when the suicide run works out. Sucks when you go all the way there and get a big old goose egg.

    Rob -

I like peachy king first and foremost, then white, then oregon cheese. The rest, I need to play around more.
