targeting browns

I was talking to Alain recently which got me thinking about something. The rainbows are everywhere as of lately (which is great and I'm not complainaing).

I am catching a hell of a lot of rainbows lately which is really fun, but I'm starting to miss the browns. As of lately catching the holdover browns has been more difficult as it was earlier in the season.

I understand rainbows are more oppurtunistic feeders but was wondering if there is any other reason it is harder to catch these holdover browns. Is it a matter of weeding through the bows to get to the browns?

When rainbows and browns are mixed into a good run do the browns position themselves in a different location or are they all mixed into the pot?

I noticed in the spring I was catching a lot more browns now its summer I'm catching more bows. Will this switch up for the fall? Do browns prefer spring and fall and rainbows early summer? Maybe I'm overthinking this lol. Maybe they just stock more rainbows than browns and its just a numbers game.

I hope this post doesn't come off as if I'm b*tching about catching rainbows, I was just thinking about this and am trying to better understand this and up my game. Some of the rainbows put in this year are monsters and very healthy. I'm thankful as ever for that.

This has been a really good fishing year for me and a lot of others as the conditions have been great. I have euro-nymphed a lot this year and love it. I'm going to have to start tying wet flies as I want to get into that next year. Davy are you planning on doing another seminar up this way next year?

Look into the shallower, faster water. I have found that with all the hatchery bows, that the browns have moved to other spots.

BTW want to buy the Scott rod??

Thanks for the fast response, as soon as the "flood" is over I can go and start my hunt for some housy browns again...

I was talking to my buddy who lives near Maxwell creek and we were talking how salmon/steelhead season is right around the corner.

I'll think about the scott, while I'm at work tonight. If it's anything like last night I'll have a lot of time to think lol. How much are you asking for?

browns also start to feed more at night as the weather gets warmer .look in pocket water next to brush overhanging the bank .Browns like deep pockets where they can hide ,then come out to feed .They will be eating more large stuff late at night .streamers are your best bet in my opion just drifted into pockets either early in the am or after dark .If you are fishing during the day look of those places that look like a troll would live under a bank . those are the places to find nice big browns .
Also start looking into wet flys for the day fishing .

Brown trout habits is largely influenced by daylight hours.
During the Spring periods they are hungry after the cold winter period and where they do so the after effects of post spawning.
Also at this time water temps begin to rise and the food base becomes more active.
As the day light hours increase the food base like wise tends to be less active but will so during conditions of diminished light, dusk to dark and dawn, and Browns well know that, which is the time they become active to feed.As already said here by nutman they seek shelter away from direct sunlight. Browns trouts eyes are way more perceptive during diminished light conditions.

My river here in AR is loaded with Brown trout. Under normal guide times l work 8 to 4 , at this time of the year we see very few Browns caught.
Go way earlier or later and that is a very different story.

Things will change again about mid September when those fish start to move upstream to look for spawning zones, they become way more aggressive at this time as territorial instincts take over.

So my advice to you would be this, Fish early and late.
Bear in mind also that many species emerge during the dark hours, caddis, mayfly and stonefly, you will see few of those during the day time periods, they are already in the stream side vegetation.

Few FF to day tend to venture to the streams at dawn, when l was younger l used to do that before my days work, and often as not l would go back in the evening and into dark.
granted l did live real close to rivers and lakes at that time.

I have noticed this in my local creek. During mid day and late afternoon, I don't see much brown activity however once the sun dips below the ridge the browns begin to "wake up". As the days become longer, the time they begin to feed also becomes later. On overcast or rainy days I can pick up a few in the afternoon but still the majority that I take are later in the evening. These are all wild fish as New Jersey has not stocked any brown trout in this creek this year, only rainbows.
