This may be a dumb question but.....

.....when you tie a dry to the tippet, does it matter which side of the eye you go through?

On a typical TDE (turned-down-eye) hook, this may have a slight effect, but I am not enough of a dry fly purist to know for sure. I think the only time this matters is when tying on wet flies on a dropper tag. Davy covers this aspect of rigging on his DVD.

It depends on the knot and the type of hook eye.

With knots that are tied around the hook shank such as a Snell knot, Turtle knot, or Double Turtle knot, it does matter in which direction you go through the eye of an up or down eye hook. With a ring eye hook it would not matter. See the instructions for a turtle knot and snell knot below and you will see that going through the eye of a hook the oposite way when the hook eye is up or down would not allow the leader a straight line through the eye of the hook.

With knots that are tied directly to the eye of the hook without going around the shank of the hook, it usually does not matter in which direction you first take the leader. The Davy knot. Orvis knot, Clinch knot would be examples.
