Farmington Rainbows

Fished the Farmington Today, and did well. I hooked into quite a few decent rainbows today that fought like champs. I ended up fishing some pocket water with a rubber legs as my anchor.

Second cast into the pocket and my reel started to scream. Ended up losing a nice fish I tried to keep him out of a fast run downstream... After a few choice words I went back to the spot to try again lol. Few casts later and was hooked into another nice fish... This time I wasn't about to lose it so I ended up chasing it down stream through some fast water almost went for a spill. Long story short it took me for a nice run a ways down river and I ended up landing it.

Went back to the spot and did it again. Lost some nice fish again, but also landed some more that also took me for a nice run down river. I definitly learned today when fishing spots where I think there may be a large fish to think ahead of time as far as how I want to land it before I hook into it.... Size 16-18 tan caddis larva/pupa was the ticket as well as the rubber legs.

The clearity of the photos didn't come out that great. They averaged 16-17" on the rod rule. Not giants but they sure fought like hell. Would have liked to gotten some holdover browns but no luck today...

You always want to be aware of that, you'll hook large fish in spots where you don't expect them.

On every drift you should be expecting a big fish to take your fly and plan accordingly. How will you set the hook (in every part of the drift), what angle will you initially apply pressure (if you can quickly get downstream pressure on a big fish it is more likely to head upstream), which way will you head downstream if necessary? If you are prepared for a big fish you are less likely to get busted off in a frantic attempt to get it in.

This was one of the earliest and most important lessons taken from a Borger presentation (Gary) almost 20 years ago.

That's a good point, thanks for sharing that...

At one point the fish ran upstream but would just sit there. I was downstream from him and pulled the rod sideways to get him to start moving so he wouldnt regain his strength. Then he ran downstream which is when it got crazy.

I was at a right angle to the fish when I pulled him sideways. After reading your post, I wonder if I should have gotten more downstream from him and then tried to pull him to see if he went upstream some more to get him away from that fast water.
