Salmon river mid january?

How's the fishing mid January up there? The wife and I are trying to plan a trip up there to get into some steelhead for the first time during MLK weekend.

There will certainly be lots of nice steelhead in the river. Aaron said that if the weather turns colder, the flows should diminsh by then.

You will still have some new/fresh fish entering the lower river. However, they will not be in the heavy numbers that are present during the fall. Many of the fish will be holding up in the larger pools. The upper river will have the greatest concentration of fish. The fishing is day to day during that time of year. If the fish are "turned on" you will get a lot. If they are not you will struggle, unless you fish a lot of spots and keep moving to find fish that are willing to bite. Steelhead are weird in the fact that every pool has fish that have been in the river for varying times. On pool might have fish that have been there for months and another one might have fish that have been there for a week. It goes without saying that the less the fish are in the river, the easier they are too catch.

I'm betting it will be cold! I remember fishing last Jan. one time when the high of the day was still in the negatives (with wind)! It was bordering on uncivil, but then again, that's the beauty, and that's what we're there for!
