The Gorge Section of the Little J

After tying flies and shooting the s--- at HRO all day on Saturday I hd the urge to ctch some trout. Kristen and I headed out to Central PA to fill the void. We left at 6 am and were there by 10. We geared up at the car and made the mile plus walk upstream.

We got to the water, set the rods up and from the first cast we knew it was going to be a great day! We had 40 degree plus temps and plenty or trout on the ends of our lines. For the next several hours were caught fish after fish in the numerous runs that make up this section of water. We worked our way back to the car. Kristen tore her ACL a few months back so we had to leave a little earlier than I would have liked to. However, to her credit she toughed it out for over 5 hours. It was hard to pry me off the water since the fishing was so good. It was one of those days. You would look at the water, say to yourself, there is one right there and cast in and sure enough you were tight into a fish. We didn't catch anything huge but lot's of trout from 10-16 inches. Many of these fish were of wild origin. We only picke up one very small wild rainbow.

Now to every great day there is a story! ... Today was no exception!

Kristen was reeling in a smaller fish, which was close to 10 inches. She said to me... "it just got bigger." I went over to look and there was her fish sideways in the jaws of a 2 foot plus brown trout! I immediately told her to slack off! She did it perfectly but her trout escaped. We were not done yet. The smaller fish came into the shallows and sure enough the big fish was chasing it around in water less than 6" deep. I could not believe that this was all unfolding right in front of me. I was maybe 15 feet away at best. The bigger trout took the small fish back into deeper water. All of a sudden the smaller fish was gone and she had the bigger one hooked! The fish made one last run to the deeper water downstream from her position and escaped.

I told her this... "now you have a really good one that got way story!"

Kristen was fishing a strike indicator with a vladi worm, that she made and an egg pattern. She also did well on an iced cased cadds... go figure with all the Grannoms in that stream.

I was long leader nymphing with a Vladi Worm and a small egg pattern. Most fish were caught on the egg.

The water was a nice 298 cfs and close to 4 feet of visibility. The water temp was 41 degrees.

Funny that you guys fished there, I was just thinking the other day that I can't wait to go there again. Is Kristen excited to go again after a really good day of fishing and seeing that giant trout?
