Farmington 4/29- high, cold & murky

What a difference a day makes. Yesterday morning the Farmington's and Still River's combined flow was well under 300cfs, tonight the dam is releasing about 500cfs, and the Still River peaked at over 900cfs.

I ventured out at lunchtime to the TMA section, and was surprised to see it was higher & dirtier than anticipated. The water was quite a bit colder than a week ago when I was there last- last Tuesday the TMA peaked at 56.5 degrees and it was 46.5 in Riverton- today the TMA hit 48 and Riverton was 43.

I froze my ass off, my hands went numb, and I ended up putting on my Winter fleece hat- it was raining non-stop until mid afternoon, and the wind gusted 10-20 mph all day.

OK, enough bitching. The day started off slow, but ended well. My first spot only produced one brown, albeit a nice 17" holdover. #2 spot produced a bunch of browns, with almost all being of the recently stocked variety, but included one holdover, one 'Bow, and one obese freshly stocked & colorful 2 year old brown. I had the feeling I was drifting thru a bunch of trout, but that the cold, dirty water was making them sluggish and I was only hooking the ones that I bumped in the nose with my nymphs. Spot #3 in the TMA is a small one that is hit or miss for me, and today it was "hit"- four big fish hooked, three landed, and the fish of the day lost- a brown prob in the 19-20" range. Damn. However, I caught the most beautiful 17 1/2" female rainbow that I've seen all year- definitely a holdover, with perfect fins, vibrant colors, and no hook marks. #4 spot was above the TMA, and was good for a mix of stocker bows & browns. I finished up with almost 20 fish landed.

Looking at the USGS graphs tonight, I'm surprised I did as well as I did. Rising water, murky, and falling water temps are a combo that often spell crappy fishing on the Farmington, but a decent number of trout took pity on me today. Maybe they just couldn't resist the Czech nymphing with my 3 fly cast. Whatever it was, given the conditions, I cannot complain about my results. Czech/Euro style nymphing works!!! Most of the takes today were pretty subtle, not surprising given the drop in water temps.

When the water is on the high side and a little off color do you use nymph with more of a flash back (brighter colors)? It seamed to me a few weeks ago when the water was high that what worked the best.

I play around, but high/off color water usually means bigger flies, gaudier, and often with "hot spots" or flash in them (flashbacks, beadheads with gold beads, etc.). Stoneflies & Princes are Go-To's in higher, dirtier water.
