Anybody have any experience fishing for reds? My family lives in NC and I'm headed to the Outer Banks in July for a bit. I want to try to at least hook some puppy drum. Any tips would be appreciated.

North Carolina has a lot of great Redfishing. The new issue of Fly Fisherman has 10 most popular hot spots for Redfish. I fished for Reds in Florida. We hit Mesquito Lagoon. Bad day. High winds and the sun went in about half way into my day of fishing. Had some shots at them but not many and no hook ups. I have family that lives down there and I plan on getting back there to stay with them. Will probably get a guide for 2-3 days and hit the lagoon again. That is a fish that is on my list to tangle with.

I'm no Redfish expert, but from articles I've read, I think a #8 is standard.

That's what I used along with a 9wt. I am going to try and squeeze out a long weekend trip this year but due to the short time frame, I want to target the best time to be there.

Opie- If you can only fish a long weekend, I suggest going to Pamlico Sound, though I've never ffed for reds. Its the big sound behind the outer banks in NC. Anyway, I have fished the sound and surrounding waters and can tell you that the reds are HUGE. I was fishing on a jetty with my cousin and some 10 year old kid out there with his mom hooked one that was well over two feet on a zebco. I told him how to reel it in and scrambled to borrow someone's net and got down and scooped it for him. Monster. They took it home and ate it. hahaha. Oh well.
