    Tully this Morning

I fished the Tully this morning for a few hours. I was going to meet up with a friend, but something came up with him, so I went it alone. Got on the water around 6:30 and fished until 9:30 or so. Water was low and a little warmer than I would have liked, but fishable early in the morning. The tricos were on all morning, with tons of fish rising every where, but the fishing was tough. I managed to catch a couple little guys and lost a really nice trout right at the end of the morning. Although I caught a couple, I must have missed 15 or 20 fish. I was fishing some really small stuff (26-28) and I was having one hell of a time hooking up with those little hooks. This was my first time fishing the tricos on the Tully (and only my third or fourth time fishing tricos ever) so I'll chalk this one up to a learning experience. I still had a great time. I really liked fishing such small flies (weird I know haha)... this whole midge and trico deal is becoming addicting for me. I think I either like really big dries or really little ones. Anyway, it was really cool being able to drive and fish when I wanted and not having to worry about a ride. When I was finished fishing at the first spot (I thought I was gonna head downstream, but decided against it when my mom called and asked if I could come home and give her a hand with a few things. Wasn't dealing with that one.) I just hoped in the car and drove in my waders for the first time... the car is officially christened! It was a nice morning to be on the water. Now to the shore for some saltwater fly fishing this weekend, and then back home and up to Lehigh county next week. I'm learning that gas goes REAL fast when I'm fishing like this!

Funny that you mention the small fly kick. I went through a few of those stints. If you aren't on one, a good trico spinner fall will get you on one in a hurry

Yea the whole long light leaders with tiny flies deal is actually really cool. It can be frustrating, but a whole lot of fun too.

Hey outdoorsman good report. Nothing beats a nice Trico hatch. It sounds like you may be suffering from premature hook set.
Not the only premature condition that teenagers suffer from. If your presenting down stream your probably pulling the fly out of the trouts mouth before he/she fully engulfs it. We all tend to set the hook when we see the take but you gotta delay a second. just because we see the rize doesn't mean the fly has been fully devored so ya set the hook and it pulls away from the fish. It takes alot of discipline. Last week in CT I was lamenting w an old timer about the same problem. he gave me a long lecture on discipline and how to delay the set. After the long lecture we started casting to needhami spinners and he missed three fish right away by setting too early. he was like "see, fifty years of fishing and I still do it." You gotta almost let the fish hook himself, by delaying and just slightly raising the tip after you see the rise go down. it takes discipline. I do it all the time, it will drive ya nuts. But when you do get the timing right it is a feeling that is unmatched in any other sport. I am jelouse. I remember getting my license and driving all over and sleeping in my Dodge Dart Swinger exploring dif streams. You have so many good years ahead, always pick the brains of the old timers and you will learn sooooo much. Good luck.

Sholgate- Will do bud. I'll be up in Lehigh early next week sometime, but a late week trip to the Tully could be a possibility (especially if they raise the flow again.) We shall see.

Sipper- Thanks. That makes a lot of sense. I'm used having a nice big piece of steel sticking out of the fly to help make up for my mistakes (like setting too early), but when using such a small fly everything has to be perfect for that little point to make it into the fish.
