Bring on the Baetis

I had the last few days off because of the flooding, so I "made the best" out of it by fishing the spring olives hatches on a Pennsylvania stream. This is a stream that goes under the radar, but the fishing is usually reliable during the early spring baetis. If you look at the photos you can see that the fish were nice size for a stream that is 10 feet wide, but what is missing are the smaller fish. I didn't catch anything smaller than 10 inches. It's concerning, because I usually get quite a few small trout on dries in this stream. On Monday the fishing was exceptional because of the cloudy weather. The fish were feeding on the surface with reckless abandonment. I fished dry dropper right before the hatch and then once the hatch started it was all dry flies. On Tuesday, it was colder in the morning, but with the clear skies, the the hatch was not as intense so the fishing was a bit slower. I still managed almost 10 fish in a few hours all on dries. So even a slow day was a good one! I just with that the small fish were there. Not a good sign.

Nice....The most exciting pic was the Olive! I've noticed through the years here on one of my favorite wild streams that the early and late season fish that hold on my usuall beat tend to be bigger,some up to 18in and the stream is only 10-15ft wide. By the time the Drakes peter out most fish are 4-10in and the big boys disappear untill cooler fall temps roll in.
