    Re: A Balance between fishing and hunting

    Interesting thread here. I personally don't hunt, and fish with any means possible (dry, nymph & chuck and duck). My mom does have a friend that only fished dries. For all intensive purposes, his season is pretty limited to the summer months, which leaves him free to hunt birds and deer in his off season. This works wonders for his fly tying selection. I've been fortunate enough to receive entire turkey tails, chock full of feathers, and enough pheasant tails and feathers to last a lifetime. Much better solution than finding fresh roadkill (I've done it)!

    Northcountryman:

    I suggest when going out fishing, fish the morning hatch. Then when fishing gets slow late morning scout for deer the rest of the day until 1-2 hours before dark, then fish the evening hatch before deer seasons -archery, smoke pole or rifle.

    When any of those hunting seasons come around, head out early am in dark to go hunting. Hunt until about 11 am. Head out fishing for the early afternoon when water gets the warmest fish til 2-3, then go back out hunting for the evening.

    The same applies to bird or rabbit hunting during the middle of the day and fish early am and late evening. Many times I hunt by some beautiful small streams while deer hunting that hold some nice brookies.

    Good Luck

    paddy;

    Good stuff, thanks!! You know how when you plan what your gonna do on your days off, you tend to narrow your focus down, in other words you say to yourself, I'm going trout fishing tomorrow, and then that's all you plan for? Multitasking has never been my forte' but in order to effectively enjoy both sports, looks like its necessary, ESPECIALLY in the fall!! There are several places that I can think of, now that you mention, that I could bring my rod and my gun(small game) or, at the very least markers for setting up tree stands and such. Got to remember to fish AND scout next year and if I ever take up bowhunting, then fish and bowhunt!!
    Fish on!
