    A Balance between fishing and hunting

    Ok, so I think i've finally figured out that there's not enough time to both of these sports as effectively and thoroughly as I'd like! Big part of the reason that I've never went salmon or steelhead fishing is 'cause I'm in the woods by that time or at least planning for the fall hunt.
    I honestly prefer fishing to hunting overall and every year say, ok, that's it, I'm not going hunting this year!! Just gonna devote all my spare leisure time to fishing! But when its starts gettin cold and the leaves are falling, I just can't keep my promise to myself and feel the itch to once again chase whitetails!! Any words of advice balancing hunting and, especially, fall fishing (salmon/steelhead, etc.)wouldbe greatly appreciated!!

    Thanks,

    Not possible. Fishing is still too good in the fall, in some places its better than the spring and summer. That's when most of the hunting seasons are.

    I do both. I just saw a very nice 8-point this weekend running two does. If seeing some horns underneath your treestand doesn't get your heart pumping, I don't know what does.

    Northcountry,
    I hear ya but what i do is if im doing archery i go small game hunting for grouse so i can cover lots of ground and see where the deer are going or what part of the woods they are using,then i go to the tribs and fish early salmon/steelhead,comeback hit the stands then last two weeks of october i hunt with a bow.no dice then i hit the tribs for browns and steelhead,then back on stand for the rut,after bow closes i hit tribs or local streams and then if i havent gotten a buck its rifle season,this year is gonna be good because if i get one early and my fiance and her dad each bag their own buck right away my cabin is two hours to erie tribs so ill head out there if the water is doable and catch some pa steelhead or go to lil J its only 25 minutes or so from my cabin woohoo,now ya got me thinkin and my blood is pumpin.

    Lonewolve;

    Thanks for your detailed response!! I will think about what you said to plan my time a little more effectively for next season as I think its probably too late for this season!! Just got back from scouting an hour ago and saw a 6-pointer!!

    Good luck to you!

    Here's the way I look at it, hunting season is short and if you have a good area to hunt you can get it over with fairly quick, with minimal fishing loss. Also getting a deer means organic meat in the freezer. You can still go out sundays to get your fishing fix. You can fish 365 days a year which is just one reason why I took it up, and because it's much more active. It's all about priorities. I'm going out archery hunting the next two days.

    Yeah, but the problem is, if you actually want to get a deer, you have to scout for deer prior to the season to find out where they are and when they're there. Unless you're hunting an area that's already been scouted for many years and you know the patterns of deer movement there, then you really have to put in the time prior to the season to increase your odds. I myself, tend to skimp out on the scouting part more than I should 'cause I'm still primarily thinking of fishing. Part of this I gues is ability to multitask in your organization and planning which is something I could be much better at!

    You'd be surprised, I've seen longer!! But hey, that's ok, if perfectly proper prose, syntax, and grammar were necessary here, I woulda been kicked off months ago!!
