Esopus Saturday PM and Sunday AM

Since we ended up on the Esopus Saturday after the outing, I decided to get back up there this morning. I figured that was a good idea since I did not disinfect my gear. It's only slightly less than two hours from home so it was the right distance to fish for a half day then head home in time to beat the traffic.

I would rate the fishing as excellent. However, the Didymo situation is serious. I didn't see many insects hatching at all on both days. All I saw were there odd caddis, small blue winged olives and midges. If you fish here, PLEASE clean your equipment. Don't go to an uninfected stream until you have cleaned your gear. I have seen a few people reporting of great fishing and hitting up the Esopus and then heading to the Neversink and other Catskill streams. If you have doing this it is irresponsible.

So as I type this, my boots, waders and net have been sprayed with 409 and are drying outside. If you go here be prepared for some great , but also be sure to clean your gear.

    Here are some photos...

These are not there for fun...

    Beauty!

    Vibrant red spots!

Look at the minnow tail in his mouth.

Heath with some nice rod angle...

    Who are you looking at???

The water clarity looks pretty good from the photos. You were probably downstream from Phonecia? Were there alot of tubers?

We left as it was getting bad. I live the bus that drives the tubers up river. It says that they are the leaders in "tubeology."

I was there 4th of July weekend Aaron. I was euro nymphing the fast water and caught a ton of those cookie cutter fish you have in your hand. Water clarity was better than it had been for most of the year, but still not great. More cloudy than murky. I too noticed the lack of bugs hatching. Because of some of the damage done to the banks in the spring, every time it rains, even a little, it goes to yoohoo for a while. Such a shame, I love that river, and its only 45 min. from the house.
