Low, low water

I've never seen this before, the Housatonic River at Falls Village and the West Branch of the Farmington River at Riverton have equal flows, both at 105 cfs. This can make for exciting sight-fishing, but I hope we get some substantive rain soon. The Housatonic is near historic lows, and the Farmington was just drawn down this week. We are lucky, however, to be getting some cool nights to moderate river temperatures in the Housatonic. Air temperature was in the mid 50s early this morning. Hope we get some rain soon.

Actually Alain... an update the Farmington River is now higher than the Housatonic.
The Housatonic at Falls Villiage is 90 cfs.
The Farmington combined with the Still River is a Whopping 108 cfs.

Get this guys the all time low is 29 cfs... believe it or not! So we are a little ways from that.
We need some rain. I still can't believe it that the Farmington is 20 cfs higher rigth now.

What a feast for the Great Blue Herons, Ospreys and Eagles. Probably a few fat otters and raccoons around too. It's funny there are so many tropical storms so alluringly close...

You guys get any rain today? I went to Steamer's website, he has photos of the river yesterday.....wow, never seen it this low in the 13 years I have been fishing on the Hous.

Yeah, we got some rain today. I got over 81 degrees for a temp tonight after work, can you believe it? I tried to steer most of the customers away from the trout today, and have them target Smallmouth with streamer instead. I knew it was going to heat up, but I was surprised at how hot the water got. We should leave the trout alone at least until Monday or Tuesday, when the morning water temps get back into the mid 60's or so. It was 62 degrees Thursday morning, only 2 days ago. The Housy both cools & heats rapidly at these super low flows. Let's hope for lots more rain along with this cooler weather moving in Sunday.

I just spoke to Torrey a few mins ago. They have been getting rain this morning and it is supposed to continue throughout the day. I am sure they will get over an inch. The fishing will be good this weekend for sure. Also, the fishing has been very good the last few times that the water temperatures have cooperated. Unfortunately these windows of opportunity were very short lived and for the most part we have had to leave the trout alone.

since they lowered the release to > 100cfs for a few weeks, has it raised the level at hogback any? when they finish the work at rainbow dam, i wonder what the release rate will be. anyone have enough experience with this to hazard a guess? ???

Until we get tropical rain or a Nor'easter, I would guess the overall Farmington flow will be managed back to around 150-200cfs. The average flow for this date is 158cfs.
