Re: Why So Many Golden Stonefly Dubbing Colors?

Different rivers have different local populations which can vary in color due to many factors. Minerals, river bottom and forage.
In fact the GS in my river seem to change with the seasons. While they always remain "yellow" that yellow will brighten in the summer/fall and have more black in the Abdomen and subdued yellow in winter/early spring. I've seen pics of stones in iron rich waters that turn well....Rusty colored.

Well if there are 400 different stonefly patterns, don't you need 400 different dubbing blends??

Also, if every comapany's dubbing was of the same material, texture and color you would nor have the 30 or so packs that I bet you have

More or less is is same for any other aquatic species. The best option is to find examples for the river you fish and then match the color, the deal is at the end of the day, how the fish see it.
What we assume often as not as the right color may be a very different deal when the material is wet or subject to different variations in water clarity.

I well remember one time fishing the Yellowstone river, a bright orange stone killed em , they would not hardly look at yellow which was more in line with the naturals, which as we well know is also often the case with many other fly patterns we use.
