How cool! Can't wait to do that with my kids when I get a little older. Kudos on a day to remember and Double Kudos on passing this awesome hobby along.
Got out to fish with my oldest daughter on Sunday and we had a great time on the river.
We started out in the park, working on her nymphing technique
Moved up to the Birches and saw a deer browsing across the river
Checked out the fish food - there were tons of these under the rocks
And she even caught a few fish
It was a day I'll remember forever.
If the line ain't tight, ya ain't doin it right
That's a beautiful river... Think you could clue me in on where it is?
thats on the housatonic river in cornwall bridge ct. thats the stream that i guide on. right now with the hot weather that we are getting trout fishing is not recommended. however the river boats an excellent samllmouth bass population. they are fairly easy to catch and some are getting quite large. in the fall the river has excellent trout fishing for holdover fish.
delarock have you heard of this river before or is this forum the first time?
anyone who lives in jersey should visit this river. they will be surprised with the quality of the fishery and how close it is.
Thats awesome Slo! Your doing your part to keep this sport alive, looks like you guys had a fun day.
god's area code "906"
I've only heard of it from this forum. I'll probably have to check it out, right now is pretty frustrating because I'm tired of catching sunnies on the 4 wt. Stillwater sucks anyways... I'm going to wait until fall before doing more exploring.
in september the river really turns back on and the fishing is great. you will not be disappoined. september is also a good time because of the iso hatch. lots of rising fish depeding on the water flows. the nymph fishing is usually great right thru december. fall is actually my favorite time of the year to fish the housatonic.
Slo: what a great trip you had! Good for you! Nice photos.
Aaron: I agree, I can't wait to fish the Hous again this fall! On an overcast day, the Isonychia will hatch slowly all day. Although they are sporadic, the fish really key on them. Sometimes the bugs themselves are even hard to see, but the fish know they are there. The fall Olives can be great until around Columbus Day, then look for midge fishing until about Thanksgiving. Generally the water is low and clear, but cool.
Best of all, fishing crowds really diminish in the fall. You will see a lot of folks checking out the foliage and maybe you will get included in a few photos.
looks like your daughter had fun fishing

Great day Slo. It's good to see someone passing down a love of fishing to the next generation. I read a disturbing article in the NYT 4 - 6 weeks ago about the dramatic decline in licenses across the country. You would never know it from the traffic on the Farmington and other popular streams but it is unfortunate that fishing and other outdoor activities seem to be fading from our collective conscious.
Happy Independence Day!

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and then release it, he might starve but we can catch the fish again tomorrow.
