    Pike

    I have been spending a lot of time fishing Lake Champlain this summer since it seems like it has been raining all summer long and the rivers are looking like chocolate milk. I have mainly been targeting pike. My goal is to get a 20 pound pike. This pike is in the 12 LB plus range.

    VT - I might be spending a couple of days on Lake Champlain near the bridge at the end of Aug. and may want to give some pike fishing a try. Any tips on the type of patterns to use and structure to key on during that time of year? I've only ever fished for pike through the ice, and I am very green when comes to fishing for toothy big game fish. Would I need a sinking line, I only have a sinking line for may 6wt. which I don't think would handle a 10+ lb pike well. What do you use for tippet with pike as well?

    Lake Champlain is a great place for Pike. I have caught many over the past couple of years but not a 20 lbr.

    A great bait to use is Berkleys Blade dancer. It is a combination of a swimbait, spinner skirt and a spoon all in one. Kills Pike. Get it in black or white. Also try a chartruse spinner with gold blades and fish the shallows or weed lines.

    Great place to go is south bay.

    My personal bests have both come from Lake Champlain (~12 lbs), both ice fishing. Glenn Lake in Vermont has some good ones, every few years people put out a 20+lbs, kind of like this one.

    Sabo- I have been using spinning gear for the pike. I want to find one of those 20+ pound fish. With spinning gear I feel I can cover a lot of water. Large red and white Dare Devils and Large Rapals in Fire Tiger is what I have been using.
    You can use your fly rod. Use large streamers in red and white combo or any streamer that imitates a bait fish. If you want to fish on the surface get some poppers and Dahlberg divers. You don't need sinking line. I do use a sink tip when I do use my fly rod in deeper water. You will need a steal leader. Most fly shops have them. The thing to keep in mind about pike is they are ambush predators. Find weed beds and fish the edges of them and you will find some pike hiding in the weeds waiting to ambush your fly/lure. I have been using a boat to find weed beds that start in about 4 feet of water and drop of to about 20 feet. The bigger pike have been on the deeper edge.
