Cleaning fly line

This may be a dumb question but what should I use to clean my fly line? Also, should I use a dressing on it afterwards and if so what do you suggest?

What exactly do you have for a line? Many of the latest Rio & Sci Angler lines only need to be occasionally wiped down with a damp cloth. Dressing some of these state of the art lines can actually impair their performance & attract dirt.

Its a low end Cortland line nowhere in that class

Yes, clean it, they are expensive! Use Glide with pad for cleaning. For floating lines, treat with the Green (silicone) Mucilin.

When my lines just need a quick cleaning I like to use the Backcountry Laboratories silicone fly line dressing. It's the stuff in the spray can, so all you have to do is spray it on your line wait a couple of seconds and then shake it off. It's good to keep in the car as it is really easy and quick to use plus it doesn't require you to strip all the line off your reel. If my lines really need a good cleaning I like to use Rio Agent X fly line dressing. I just put a good size dab on a cloth, rub it in slightly and run my line through that spot a few times until it's clean. I usually then wait 10 min and buff it with a dry cloth. Just make sure you're stripping your line onto something clean like a table or it's just going to keep getting dirtier (very frusterating lol)

nymphster you said some only need to be wiped down ,what makes those lines not need floatant ?

Most High End lines have Multiple slickening agents and bonded coatings mixed into the line that come to the surface with use.. So usually just a wipe down is more then enough for cleaning because the line repels the dirt

I cleaned my flyline and applied a dressing to it. I can hardly believe the difference it makes. I am getting an additional 5-7 feet per cast now which is pretty damn good for this greenhorn. Thanks.
