    Neversink River Season?

As I've posted before, i'm new to NY flyfishing (transferred here w/the Coast Guard). I'm confused about the status of the Neversink river (Sullivan County) being open or closed until April 1st. I've seen some posts that people are fishing the Neversink in December and catching trout. However, they are claiming that there are other species that are in the river as well and trout is the "by-catch". Any clarification is appreciated. Semper Paratus.

The Neversink is closed to all angling. You can get away with that loop hole here on the Esopus as I fish it all year long. If you hit the Esopus right it has one of the biggest runs of wild Bows in the state. This activity is starting now. The DEC is considering a catch and release year round fishery now so go out and make a showing. This is a river and I can't beleive i'm saying this but needs more anglers/freinds.

    Re: Neversink River Season?

Thanks for the quick reply. I've driven from Staten Island to the Esopus this past July in spite of the low water and LOVED that river and even caught some fish. Since then I've stayed closer to home in NJ and been seriously dissapointed with the quality of the streams (crowded, over fished and overgrown with vegetation). What are the other species that I can fish for besides the Trout as I want to make sure I'm legally angling? semper paratus.

Don't forget the Walleye and Smallies.

I already spoke with the Department of fisheries on this topic. They have no problem with us fishing but they said "be easy with any trout you catch as not to shock them". Their words..... Besides we were waving back to the Sheriffs,Town Trucks and DEC last trip. Your good to go. You just can't be targeting Trout per say. Like if the DEC stops and asks what your fishing for you tell them anything willing to bite 8).

Hurray for year long fisheries here. I love the Idaho Fish and Game
