I like the addition of the lateral line and the bit of flash it adds. I'll add to my pattern and see how that goes for me. The idea of segmentation with the R. rib is sound, not my style but I'm shure it works.

After seeing the video I have made some modifications to my standard Crane Fly Larvae pattern. I like the dubbed head and the lateral line.

Landon Mayer, renowned guide for giant trout and friend of John Barr, has a picture of the crane fly pattern he uses in his book "How to catch the Biggest trout of your life". His crane fly is simply a strip of chamois on a hook. I have tried Barr's more detailed Crane fly and Mayer's chamois strip. The chamois strip works better. In fact, when I used this chamois strip I sometimes had trout tug back when I tried and failed to hook them. Yes, they fought for the strip like it was a nightcrawler. This was an unweighted chamois strip.
I have used the Barr pattern as a heavy fly when Polish nymphing but I seldom catch anything with it. Lesson for me? Lifelike action and texture beat artistic realism.
