    You know it's good when...

a canoe tips over and coolers, flip flops, a paddle and the boat floats by and your client nails one as this is all happening! This is the, top photo of the week, followed by Charles giving some love to a nice brown trout...

For some of the canoers out there, a nicer thing could have not happened.
Standing in moving water circulates the soul and quiets the mind.

Canoes and kayaks are just a part of the game in the summer. This spring I was fortunate enough to be tagging along fishing with AJ when he had to quit a little early. He said,"Im meeting a couple of friends for dinner, you want to come?" I said sure! One of the guys was local friend and the other was Davy Wotton. The burgers and beer were great but the chance to sit and listen to Davy was priceless. It was the first time I saw Aaron sitting there listening and not having to answer a ton of questions. Aaron was deferring because the master was in the house. Sorry about the tangent but one of the many things he touched on was that canoes and kayaks do not disturb the fish much at all. I never realized that and used to get irritated when they go by.

We the fishermen are more put off by the boats than the fish.

About Davy, he has taught me so much with the simple phrase, "why do you think that happened line that," another good one is to never eve use the word never when talking about the behavior of fish. A third popular lesson is to not fish only one method, even if you know it's better than another. Whenever I discuss fishing with him I try to take mental notes constantly. What is more interesting is how we can look at a fishing situation so differently. He taught me a ton on the Neversink in about a half hour and a 22" brown later. Also, since I'm rambling here learning about historical aspects of fly fishing help you to understand how the equipment and tecniques if today came to be.

This is very true. Canoes have little effect on the fishing. If a trout is feeding and gets put down by a boat they will be back on the feed in very little time. The dudes that get pissed when boats go by are usually stuck in a skunk funk and need to blame someone. When a few boats are coming down I try to use those few minutes to check knots, dry and fluff a fly, take a quick leak. In a coupla minutes the boats are gone and the fish are feeding. You gotta love the canoes bcuz they are usually carrying chix in bikinis. The North West Corner has lots of interesting chix in bikinis who love to canoe :P. No complaints from me!

Sipper, great perspective! At a place called Box Canyon in Idaho ones patience may be tested. They have masses of people floating in rafts. I have never seen anything like it. A continuous flow of people. I think the USGS should monitor rpm (Rafts Per Minute)

Yeah, there's a lot huh? I never really understood that, since the wind blows like a mofo every day there and its usually cold, but whatever.

In the box, it really doesn't matter how many rafts go over, since all the bows are deep in the rapids. As an aside, I think a good Euro-nympher could clean house in that place. Lots of whitefish and big rainbows.

    Chris_T,

I witnessed a world class Euro-nympher literally pick that place apart. If I had not seen that I might have thought the river was just OK.

paddlers of any kind don't bother me much. They are good allies in the fight for river access, water releases and water quality. We all want the same things. Jason
