    Bamboo

I obtained a 1950's-ish bamboo rod that belonged to my great uncle. I am thinking about breaking it out this year for some dry fly action but am unsure of what kind of reel to mate it with. I have a 3 weight reel that I think might do the trick, it balanced well when I mounted it and I am thinking the lighter line will work well with the smaller dries i plan on using. Any suggestions would be welcome as I am a totally ignorant when it comes to fishing dries.

Most of the newer reels are made light to balance with a graphite rod. I prefer a heavier reel to balance the weight of cane. You can get a USA made Pflueger Medalist from the 60's for about $25 in an online auction. Depending on the rod length and line look for the 1492, 1494, or 1495. Note that those reels came right hand wind. If you find one with DA at the end of the model, e.g. 1494 DA, you can easily convert it to LHW. Otherwise you can also buy a drag disc newly made that will do the swichover for about $20.

If you don't want to buy another reel, try what you have! Also, don't be afraid to try different lines from 3 to 7 weight to find the one that casts the best for your style. No rules except enjoy!
