    Harvey Slack Leaders

I am planning tie my own dry-fly leaders. I have heard and read a lot about the George Harvey Slack Leader and in fact found the link on rise form to be informative. However my dilemma is finding the specific monofilament called for in their article. Can anyone point me in the right direction or recommend a substitute including where best to find it? The specific lines recommend are Maxima UltraGreen and Amnesia Green. Here is the link to the article http://www.riseformstudio.tv/leader_formula.html

I have tied many of the Harvey dry fly leaders using frog hair and they work really well. The nymphing leader is interesting and I will have to give that a try.

    Re: Harvey Slack Leaders

I recommend you try the Borger Uni-Body leader formula below. It requires fewer knots and is much simpler to modify. If it works for you, there is no need to use a more complicated formula:

If you want to go and use the multiple knot and step down formulas, here are the sources for Maxima and Amnesia. Make sure for the Maxima, that you use the correct correct type - Brown Chameleon or the Ultragreen.

    Re: Harvey Slack Leaders

I took your advice and bought some Maxima Ultragreen and sat down with Aaron's video for about an hour and learned both the blood knot and the Wotton knot. I feel like a day cancelled out fishing due to weather was not lost. I'm going to tie a bunch of those different leader styles and look forward to experimenting this season.

Last question, did you ever feel you needed the brown over the ultragreen?

    Rj,
I use Maxima for all my freshwater leaders {trout, smallmouth, largemouth, panfish,Salmon,Steelh ead}i use the Chameleon for all butt sections and half the mid section , the other half of the mid section i use Ultragreen and the tippet i also use Ultragreen .I will this year however start trying some Rio flouroflex either flouroflex or flouroflex plus for nymphing and wets/softhackles in the tippet area.
The Maxima Chameleon is the toughest ,Maxima Ultragreen is softer and more limp.
As for Harvey leaders, well George set the bar many many years ago,but the Borger Leader system works too.
I personally like the Harvey leader system for dries .
As for Amnesia ,that's great for making a sighter or using it for a sort of indicator system built into the leader but i wouldn't want it in the dry fly leader.
On the Great Lakes tribs it has been being used for years as a sort of indicator in the butt section for chuck and duck or High Sticking.

I realize that leader construction is just as involved as any other aspect of flyfishing. I purchased ultragreen for the butt section and rio power flex for the tippet. It's obvious that there is better material on the market than what I purchased. Do you think the material I purchased will suffice or should I return the power flex and opt for the fluoroflex or other products?

    Use what you have.

    RJ,
Use the ultragreen for now,but when you get a chance pick up several spools of Maxima Chameleon from 25 ,20,15,12,and maybe 10 lb. Then use the ultra green for the midd sections as well as the tippet but keep the rio flouroflex or fluoroflex plus its a great choice for tippets as well .
