I assume Torrey posted it.....maybe it can be posted here. re:.....how to present to the rather finicky trout (of late) rising to small olives. I recently made a decision to allocate a certain part of my fishing time to dries - even though they may not be rising (blind) and assuming it will be less productive than streamers/Nymphing. On Sunday afternoon I was in the park getting frustrated at a few risers that wouldn't indulge me. HRO's suggestions posted today really is a very brief but very detailed summary of some invaluable advice . Of Course....I took the only route a neophyte could on Sunday....I threw on a #14 Royal Wulff - kept drifting it through the faster riffles and nailed 2 browns. It was very exciting - the takes were not subtle and I didn't have to set the hook...the line went tight on each strike by itself. Anyway...I appreciate the posts and figured it should be shared.

Funny, I've had some of my best success, and certainly most enjoyable dry fly moments on the river prospecting with a Wulff in fast water - a great feeling to just have a hunch about where a fish may be rising only to have them strike violently on the first cast (and it always seems to be the first one if you present it OK). Also good advice on the HRO report is to move to emergers. I've been using size 22 BWO emergers as the uppermost fly on my nymph rig to some success, as well as as a dropper off a deer-hair BWO dry...only problem I've found with the dropper technique is I go through a bunch in a session using 6x as the trout seem to like to strike violently when I am roll casting out of the drift and break off instantly, regardless, the emerger certainly adds more to your drift and it seems like a little drag pulling the fly up can induce a solid strike.

I most certainly wish we had hopper fishing here like out west. You can break fish off with 2 and 2X out there if you yank too hard. I find that ISO type patterns are great attractor patterns due to the longevity of the hatch.

Thaks for the nice words guys, I've cut & pasted that part of my report below:
Fish surface feeding on Olives can be picky, and there are several things you can do to up your chances for success:
1. get close to make accurate, drag free floats easier to attain & make it easier to see what's happening,
2. lengthen your tippet out to 3-4' to create some slack for drag free drifts,
3. make multiple casts to ensure you put the fly right on their nose, they often won't move more than an inch to either side when on smaller flies,
4. after you have made multiple good presentations, either change your fly or show it to a new fish,
5. don't forget to try emergers/cripples & spinners, they often outproduce the traditional adult dun dry fly patterns,
6. if you have trouble tracking your fly tie it behind a bigger, more visible fly such as a Parachute Adams or Fall Sulfur- tie about 18" of tippet off the bend of the visible fly to tie your Olive to it, 7. during Olive hatches (and others), fish often get into a regular feeding rhythm with a certain number of seconds between rises, so try to time it so your fly drifts over them when they are ready to rise again.
