    Re: "Sewer Salar"

It is insane how big some of the Salmon are that they stocked- I don't think we saw one under 10 pounds, and most were somewhere in the teens. There are more than a few over 20#, and I know of several that were weighed and stocked over 30#. I was surprised at how pretty some of them were- they almost reminded me of pictures I've seen of Atlantics from Russia. I think the last batch are going in this week- something like 200 5-6# pound fish, the "little" ones. From what I've seen & been told, the smaller ones are more aggressive to the fly. Try large streamers, either swung broadside across the current or stripped in like you would for trout. Fav colors are yellow, white, and black. 0x is fine for a tippet, they are not leader shy. A 7-8 weight rod is perfect, but anything from a #6-9 will do the job if you know what you are doing. Rember that you cannot add weight onto your leader, so either use weighted flies, or sinking leader/sink-tips. You don't need to be on bottom to catch them, but it does seem to help if you get it down a foot or two.

Torrey, that's a beauty! I definitely want to tie into one of those in the next few weeks. What a beautiful jaw on that one! That definitely seems worth the trip.

Believe it or not, that fish in the picture is barely average compared to the other ones. They all seemed to be big hook jawed males with giant adipose fins. I'd say 12-15 pounds was typical, and many that you could see were much larger.

They can be a lot of fun if you try and 8-9 foot 6weight rod. Today would be a good day to try for them, it is supposed to be 50 degrees and cloudy all day - dam it, and I cant get out til tomorrow afternoon. >

yeah, all I had that day was a 10 foot 5 weight. I was supposed to fish the Farmington. however, when Torrey told me how big the salmon were, we went there. I got one that was weighed at 19 pounds. I thought my rod was going to explode several times during that fight.

Joe-G you are right today would be a perfect day. The water is going to warm up a little and the fish will become a little more active.
Why can't the warm weather wait till the next time we can get out?
