    top 5 streamers

I've been in a streamer tying jag lately. Honestly, I'm tired of fishing/tying WB's even though they work.
Been tying up some Madonnas, Crayfish, and some Wooly Sculpins, for a little experimentation.

What are your top 5 streamers?

    I guess mine are:

    Wooly Buggers
    Muddlers
    Black Ghost
    Wooly Buggers :-\
    Wooly Buggers :-\

What color has been the most productive for you?
    I'm not a fisherman. I'm a fishing machine!

    Re: top 5 streamers

If you asked me this a few years ago I would have answered quite differently.

In the last few years i have really fallen in love with fishing streamers; it's so productive, and the flies can really move some gigantic fish. Even if I dont catch the fish on that trip, I come back another day and already know where that BIG fish is.

    1 Zoo Cougar
    2 McCunes Sculpin
    3 Clouser Minnow
    4 Zonker
    5 Bucktail

Colors - depend on situation, light, rain, water color/clarity, fishing pressure...
If the line ain't tight, ya ain't doin it right

Do you have the pattern for that one? Google came up with nothing.

Thanks. I should have realized it was McCune's - I'd seen that one mentioned on the forum before. It does look good, and I suppose a darker brown or olive version would work well, too.

The only drawback to that pattern is that the soft materials are tied on in a position that leaves them/thread exposed and you can only land a few fish on it before the fly is torn to shreds.

unfortunately you are right. we have to come up with a way to make it tougher. that fly definately has its moments. i think that harold makes all of his more expensive flies come apart easily..... :P

    Re: top 5 streamers

Top Five? Tough, but here goes:

Zoo Cougar- yellow- my best big trout streamer in '06
Madonna- olive, white, yellow- great all-around streamer, very productive
Double Bunny- olive/white- big trout & smallmouth love it
    Spectrumized Leech- brown, olive
Zonker- natural, white- very consistent fly almost anywhere

If I get to add in a few more, here are my picks:

Woolly Sculpin- olive, black, white, brown- versatile
    McCune's Sculpin- deadly at moments!

My two most consistent streamer colors are brown and white. Yellow is great in the Fall and in dirty water, and as an attractor color on slow days. Natural Zonkers are a go-to fly on almost any river anywhere, with white a close second. Some of my friends swear by chartreuse in dirty water. With streamers, I think it is vital to play with colors, some days it makes all the difference in the world, and it can change as the day progresses and light conditions change. Most of my streamers are BIG, like starting at 3-4" and going up to 6" and even bigger on occasion. When I put a streamer on, my intention is not just to catch trout, but to catch trout 20" and up, preferably bigger!!! And believe me, I've caught lots of 12" trout on giant, saltwater sized flies.
