I've used stren with good effect. I found a 200 yd spool at a big box "bass" place.
Fished a well known TCA Thursday afternoon, Euro style, did ok, however my 15 pound couiled sighter made from Sufix Hi-Vis gave me some fits; this mono like most monos was extremely stiff. Tried to keep off the water but it was near freezing so suspended off the water it would freeze, just on the water would be fine, wouldn't react right though, actually took it off and hi sticked with out the sighter.
Looking for a different mono material to use this time of year, Ande does the same thing, stren is limper sometimes harder to find in hi vis gold or yellow, any suggestion?

I know the problem you are having. If it is that cold you may have problems no matter what mono you use, it is ok to float the sighter on the water I use mucilin and it wont freeze when you coat the coils.

did you think about dressing it so the water wouldnt stick to it when suspending it? FYI I use 8lb or 10 lb for most of that stuff or fly line backing. its been so damn warm in colorado that i cant tell you what would really work in cold temps but Mono definitely gets stiffer in cold temps. I would think that a lighter mono with some mucilin on it would be the best solution.

I ordered a pair of colied sighters from wflies and have not had a problem. The size of those are .35mm. Also anything I ordered from them gets shipped quick.
straight would be a good bet in super cold water...

Good Stuff; appreciate the feed back, it's what makes this site so great. Flydaddy I will try the paste good idea, would imagine flyfloatant would do the same, SherpaB I do use lighter mono 12, 10 even 8 at times, but when tangles and does , it usually breaks, and the coils don't stay set as long, my experience, FrankM - i like straight mono a lot of times or a peice of orange or yellow 30# dacron backing, in freezing weather the dacron icces bad since it absorbs water.
I goggled sighters yesterday and came across another sight, TroutLegend, they had some good info there also ; not to take away from here, it's a sight for competition fly anglers.
Will be trying some new ideas this week and will let you know.
Still prefer the coiled sighter for its characteristics the slightest twitch, I set and it usually a fish, when snagged and pull free usually the rig gets steepled cast above and is lost overhead or returns in a twisted over tangle that needs to be rerigged.
I prefer brightly coloured fluorocarbon. I use 0.011inch, (#3 in Japanese system) mostly, and mostly as a straight section, only occasionally switching to a coil made from same material - I still much prefer the more direct contact one gets with a straighlt level section over a coil, coils get blown around by the wind, and coils are just one more fiddly piece of gear. You can get some nice bright Fc's from Japan now, with opaque dyes; I've used some that are brighter than Siman bicolor for my eyes. The FC coils still float when pasted.
