    10 ft nymph rods

    Hi,
I am looking for a 10ft 4 or 5 wt rod that will handle all nymphing techniques. I tried a number of different rods but last week I tried out the Grays streamflex and the new Hardy Marksman2. The sales person talked me into the 4wt. I have heard a lot of good things about the streamflex but nothing about the new Hardy. Has anyone tried the new Hardy? The Hardy seemed like it had a slightly stiffer (faster) action that would be better for casting drys. I am relatively new to fly fishing and newer to nymphing and the last rod I brought I spent too much for a rod I now don't like.
    Thanks,
    Steve

    Steve,
I have a Hardy Marksman thats about 2 yrs old and it's a really nice rod for all aspects of nymphing. The older streamflex 10 ft 4 wt is a good rod also at a good price if you can find one. BUT.. If you really look around you can find a Z axis 10ft 4 wt. that is in my opinion a GREAT rod. Also look into the BVK and Cabellas CZN these will work good for you also and are less expensive. My vote is for the Z axis JMHO

i have the marksman 104 and the dry fly action is iffy at best. i overlined it with a 5 which has been a vast improvement. i would reccommend the marksman2 103 or one of the streamflex models if you want a good compromise between nymphing and dry. the z-axis is a broom handle but a good dedicated nymph rod (imo). the marksman 2 is supposedly alot more forgiving in action than its predecessor which i have. between the marksman and the streamflex, i would go marksman.

For me it's not about over lining the rod, it's more about using the reel for other rods. A two weight is very specialized, so I'll use a three weight line on it so I can use the same reel on my 9 foot three weight for dry fly fishing as well. I own one two weight line, I do like it, but not enough to devote a reel to it.

What I've been told is that over-lining a rod loads the rod better for faster action rods. Easier to mend, roll cast etc. Can one of the experts confirm?

i did it to slow the action of the rod down and the 5wt line better lods the rod. a 10' 4 wt does not feel like a 4 wt to me... more like a five.

I see a 5wt Rio Gold on my 4wt Streamflex because it roll cast indicator rigs so much nicer.
