Dave and I made it to the SBR today after a setback in traffic. We each did well today. Dave got two nce WILD brook trout today! I was not so fortunate so I settled for some holdover stocked trout. However, I hooked Bubba by The bridge. Dave and I both watch as this rediculously fat bow cleared the water and set itself free >I observed a good amount of insect activity. There were Cahills, Epheron Luekons, Small BWOs and sporadic isonychias hatching the whole time I was there. I also some some brown caddis flying up the river before I left.
The river is alarmingly low. I pray that we get some rain or the larger trout slated to be stocked in the fall will not last long. The river is running out of "hiding" spots for even the smaller trout.
I also took some pictures of the "site" that is causing the siltation of the stream. I also took pictures of the silt in the river itself. We stopped at multiple locations and observed many stretches that were once rocks that are now covered in silt. I am going to e mail the pictures to the state DEP. Something needs to be done to protect this stream from this abuse. If we do not start this now t wll be too late. I would hate to se such a gem deteriorate. Let's hope that they send some people out to check this out. I will post the pictures of the site in question as well as the silt in the stream when I get home tomorrow.
This afternoon was great. . .as usual, the Predator found the biggest fish, and got into him fast. We were in a stretch with some big trout. As I turned my head, Aaron's rod was down to the water (fully flexed), as the huge rainbow shot up! I saw the enormously fat belly as the fish cleared the water. The girth of the head alone was impressive, yikes! Awesome! The river was definitely dangerously low, even Aaron remarked on the fact that it was the lowest he had seen it.
Thanks to the fly of the month, the one and only RS2 got them for me. The brookies had remarkable coloration. I'll post pics soon. The last brookie (and also the largest) was feeding like mad on top at the very head of a pool. I hooked him once, and then was lucky enough to catch him a couple minutes later. That was the true bonus fish, and the best one of the day for me.
Today was the unveiling and test trial of my new Z-Axis, and it was all that I had heard of and expected. The ease of casting, and the pin-point accuracy were really incredible, not to mention the weightless quality to the stick. I couldn't be happier with it. And no Nymphmeister, it's not broken yet.
We saw a few anglers here and there, meeting two of them at our last spot, nice guys. I hope they'll visit the site soon.
The silt was very disappointing; it really showed throughout a majority of the water we visited (which consisted of several miles of stream bed). Hopefully these pictures will make a difference and enforce what must be a regulation against the development area.
Another great day on the river!
