Wawayanda State Park
Has anyone ever fished for trout at Wawayanda? I know that they stock the lake with trout/salmon, but have any of you fished the inlets/outlets? I am curious to what might be lurking around in there. It would be cool if the salmon tried spawning in there
Also, I have heard some rumors that the Doublekill creek which starts in the park and heads down the mountain into New York, may actually contain trout. Although I have explored its entire length on foot multiple times, I havnt fished it that thoroughly (A few times in mid-day in mid summer for a bit, not ideal conditions). I would be curious to find out what is in there besides chub and sunnies. Feel free to PM me if you wanted to exchange some info or organize a trip there.

Many times over the years but not much recently. The trout and Landlocked Atlantic Salmon while not numerous are catchable two ways:
-
1)1) Bait, preferably live herring during the warmer months near the right (facing north) shore (it's 90' deep there).
2)2) Flies (streamers) fished from the beach or in coves during spring and fall.
The Doublekill has both stocked and wild browns present with the occasional rainbow and odd wild brookie washed down fromthe very headwaters. Large, dark, heavily weighted stoneflies (Size 6-9) are the ticket. Stay away when the water is high but don’t bother fishing it after June until October.

Thanks
Thank you for the information. I will be sure to let you know how I do if I make it to the Lake. I tried the top of the DK where it starts in the park the other weekend and caught a bunch of chub..but I did hook something fat about 13 inches in length with some reddish color to it that tail walked and spit my fly. It was fiesty, and I would like to think it was a brookie but I guess ill never know since I didnt get that good of a visual. There doesnt seem to be much if any public access where it ends in NY, but there are certainly a number of spots in between that at least look promising (deep in the park). I know it like the back of my hand when im on foot...but armed with a fishing pole I feel clueless in those spots, haha.

I ended up fishing the main lake about 3 weeks ago. It was hard to bring waders and a fly rod to the spot I wanted to try so I just hiked in with my spinning gear
since I didnt have access to a boat either. It was tough fishing even with a spinning rod, but I ended up landing a small LL salmon and a 5 to 6 pound large mouth bass. Not a bad day. I cant wait for them to open up the boat house so i can take out a boat with my fly rod! Looking forward to going back.
