This is a very common rig in Alaska. Fly dogma aside, if rigged correctly it's very effective and very safe to the fish.

If you set the bead 2 fingers above the hook, there's never a foul hook. It's always in the corner of the mouth with ZERO gut hooks. Fished barbless it's even better.

The bead is allowed in the fly only zone if you tie a nymph below it instead of the bare hook. The DEC told me that they have had many inquiries into the legality of it in the fly zones and their opinion is that it is an attractor if a nymph is the terminal end.
What makes it effective is two fold a) the hook is seperated from bead providing a more accurate profile of an egg & b) the bead is very hard and gets spit out immeadiatly upon strike; this spitting out creates a hydrodynamic similiar to a side eddy which swings the hook into the fishes mouth or lip. The act of spitting the bead out brings the hook into the fishes mouth because the 1.5" to 2" creates a pendulum effect between bead & hook. REMEMBER only legal in fly zone if a nymph is the terminal end not a bare hook
