Small midges, sow bugs and more small midges and sow bugs. There are a great deal of trout in there and some monsters too. Bring San Juan worms and eggs with you as well. Flies like that can work anytime there.

Nymphing with a tiny strike indicator with as little weight a possible is the name of the game there. When I was there I saw many 10 pound plus fish.

Little Red, White and Norfork are my local rivers those that l guide.
All of these rivers are tailwaters and subject to generations from very low to very high.
Wade fishing options are dependant on water levels at any given time. What is also a issue so far as how trout will feed is if you are fishing either rising or falling water, every day is a different deal here related to location you intend to fish and what generations have taken place prior to that location.

Brown trout in these rivers systems as large as they are will oblige by taking very small flies such as those Aaron suggested, fish well over 10 lbs at times.

In the case of Sowbugs, have these in sizes 14/16/18 in colors of Gray/tan and natural, as this can make a big difference, with and without bead heads which should be for these flies 1.5mm, copper, silver, nickel. Often these fish will be found in very shallow water and you need no weight.
Midges in sizes (for low water ) 16 to 22, in colors, Black, Red, Claret, Gray, zebra style, prism, whitetails.
Worms. For low water you need micro worms tied to size 16 and 18 scud hooks. In colors of Tan, Earthworm, red and claret.

Many of these fish you can sight fish and you need no indicator in this case, you will see well enough the fish move, open its mouth to take the fly.

Dry flies may also be a good bet, here again small midge emergers in size 18/20 and micro soft hackles are good bets.
Most times you will need at least 5x at times 6 and maybe 7.
Long leaders 12ft or more with extended added tippet sections, , 9ft tapered leader with a least 3ft or more added tippet.

Drop me a line closer to your time of visit and l will let you have the up to date forecast.

How far are you from those tailwaters, they are awesome fishing, double awesome! Fished them last year for 3 months and I miss them terribly. I even asked my wife if we could move there, that didn't go over so well. So I'm stuck in PA. Barnett acces is the best place I think to wade the LR, lots of fish. White and Norfork are even better and there is BIG, BIG fish there. The vladi was the top producer when the generation first started, the browns killed that fly.

    Wish I was there.

    Kilroy,

I live 5 mins from Bull shoals dam, and trailer my boat to the zones l wish to fish and guide that day.
White river has some 100 miles of tailwater.
Norfork 5 miles, 40 miles down stream from Bull dam at its confluence of the White.
Little Red, best fishing is within 25 from the dam.
Then we have the Spring river, and the Northfork of the White in MO which is a true spring creek that flows into Norfork lake.

Above Bull shoals lake there are two more tailwaters, Beaver and Tanycomo which are also in the White river tailwater system. If l remember a total of 168 miles of trout water.

Within 100 miles unreal trout fishing waters.. The White is overall the premier water.
By far it produces more trophy Browns than the others, fish over 10lbs, 1000s from 20 to 30 ins a year. It also holds very large numbers of Bows, days of 80 or more fish are not uncommon here, with Cutts and Brooks found closer to the dam zones.

I plan on going back again soon, I loved it there. I'll drag the camper there. I'll go when the crowds are down and the bite is on and I'll get you to take me out for a couple of days of guiding. I guess it's crowded in in fall, Davy?
