nice!!.......we are lucky to have such productive trout streams so close to the city.
If you want to fish these streams you will need a DEP Watershed Permit along with a license. The permit is free and available online. Jason
I had a chance to fish some of the Croton Watershed streams this past week. I stopped in at the Bedford Sportsman to see Charles and Todd. Charles gave me some “honey” holes to try. I was not disappointed at all. Actually, I was very impressed at how good the fishing was, as well as the water temperatures. On Tuesday evening I observed one of the heaviest isonychia hatches that I have ever seen and trust me on this, the trout were very familiar with what an isonychia nymph was.
It was so good that I took Tom up there the second day. Needless to say we went to another prime location and beat up on them. We also had some great dry fly action with Light Cahill spinners. The trout were rising everywhere! As Tom put it, “all you needed to do was get your fly within one foot of the fish and it was on.”
Before the hatch and spinner fall began, Tom fished dry/dropper and I Euro nymphed. Both techniques did quite well. A combination of micro nymphs and caddis larvae did the trick.
Get over to the Westchester/Putnam County streams and be sure to stop in and say hi to Charles and Todd over at The Bedford Sportsman.
They are inl the heavy water...
Lots here!
I did see one very large trout, but I spooked it...
